Mel's Market next to McDonalds is a good place for basics and fruit and they have an excellent meat and fish counter. The teriyaki beef is the best, you've gotta bbq some of this up |
Shima's Waimanalo; located in the center of Waimanalo. A local style grocery store. A bit bigger than Mel's. You can do all your shopping at Shima's, but will most likely use Shima's for particular items or last minute shopping. Located next to the Waimanalo Feed Store; and just across from L&L (local take out plate lunches).
Costco in Hawaii Kai is about 15 minutes from the house. Turn left on 72, stay on Hawaii past the Foodland Shopping center, go over the bridge, turn right on Keahole Street, Costco will be on the right. Open 9 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays for Business Members. Safeway in Kailua (be sure to use your Safeway card or give the phone number: 808-259-7792)... take 72 right to 61 right to first light, Hamakua Road, go just past first light on Hamakua Road and Safeway is on the left. There is an interesting store behind Safeway, Daie, where they have lots of local kind and Japanese food and items. Foodland in Hawaii Kai (sign up for the Maikai Card for discounts), take 72 left, stay on highway for a while, around Makapu'u Point, after Hanauma Bay come down hill and Foodland will be on the right in shopping center.
Don Quijote in Kailua for lots of stuff; groceries, plus toiletries, Hawaiian gifts, electronics, clothes, and don’t miss their $1.00 area. Lots of fun stuff from Japan. They are located right next to Safeway. We just had some guests remind me what a great place to shop this is. “We did find Don Quijote for the pancake mix and wished we had discovered it earlier in our arrival. You must put that place down on your list to shop. I found their prices were much better than Safeway or Foodland.” Lucia
There is a Farmer's Market every Thursday morning at Waimanalo Beach Park (turn left on 72, go past the 7/11 and you will see the Beach Park on your left). The Farmer's Market is an excellent place to get local fruits, vegetables, flowers, and eggs. It is from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. only. Now there is also an every other Saturday morning Farmers Market in Waimanalo: Waimanalo Market.
Waimanalo Feed Store.... in the main part of town, by the gas station and across Jack-in-the-Box, has all kinds of food items and cereal. This is by far the cheapest place to buy your cereal. Of course they will not always have every brand, but they usually have a large selection. They carry overstock or dented items. They also have lots of pasta sauce and pasta noodles, peanut butter (including organic and natural), jelly, ketchup, mustard, soups, beans, rice, oil, some baking goods, and many more items. It's a fun place to shop.
The Source in Kailua is our favorite health food store. Family run. They carry fruits/vegetables and meat, plus tons of other items. They can also order for you in advance if there is something in particular you want. www.TheSourceNatural.com. Located on Hamakua Road, turn left off 61, just past the best chocolate store: Sweet Paradise Chocolate.
Sweet Paradise Chocolate, local, handmade chocolate. Each piece is a work of art. Try the caramel/sea salt chocolate. Sweet Paradise Website

Point Break Surf Shop is next to the 7/11 and Keneke's and is a great local surf shop, board shorts, suits, hats, sunscreen, mats, nice local stuff and really nice owner Tony gives discounts to all our guests. Boots and Kimos is a great place for breakfast, awesome banana macadamia nut sauce pancakes (open until 2 p.m. only). Take 72 right to 61 right, right on Hamakua Road, make left at first little street, it curves to the right and Boots and Kimos is on the right just after curve, just past Napa Auto Parts Store.
